Meetings


Every year, since 1995, Polish Association for the Study of the Liver has organized country-wide conferences and meetings.

1. 1st Congress of the PASL: ‘Progress in treatment of liver diseases’ was held in 1995 in Szczecin (organized by Anna Boroń MD PhD).

2. Another meeting in 1996 also took place in Szczecin: 1st Scientific Conference of PASL was titled ‘Progress in diagnosis of liver disease’. Coming with this venture, EASL-PASL Joint Postgraduate Course - Viral and immune liver damage was organized ( by Anna Boroń MD PhD).

3. In 1997, a topic of the 2nd Scientific Conference of PASL in Szczecin was ‘Acute liver failure’ (organized by Anna Boroń MD PhD).

4. In 1998 2nd Congress of PASL took place also in Szczecin and was titled: ‘Cholestasis. Progress in hepatology.’ (organized by Anna Boroń MD PhD)

5. On 6-8 of May 1999 in Mikołajki the 3rd Scientific Conference of the PASL was organized on ‘Portal hypertension’ (by Piotr Małkowski MD PhD). What is important, this was the first event with English as an official meeting language and 300 participants. Of the invited foreign guests Yvon Camus (France), Jorge Cardoso (France), Niger Heaton (UK), Marshall.J. Orloff (USA), Jean Marc Perarnau (France), Massimo Pinzani (Italy) added some prominence to the conference.

6. On 25-27th of May 2000 the international 4th Scientific Conference of the PASL entitled: ‘Nutrition in liver disease’ was held in Szczecin (organized by Anna Boroń MD PhD) with 150 participants and foreign lecturers: Marsha Y. Morgan, Mathias Plauth, Claudio Tiribelli, Nurdan Tozun, Manfred Mueller, Stig Bengmark. The conference was focused on the issue of pathophysiology of malnutrition and of the role of dietary treatment in chronic liver disease in adults and children, especially cholestatic liver disease and enteral and parenteral nutrition after surgery of the liver and biliary tree. Conference materials were published in the Medical Science Monitor, 2000; 6, Suppl.1.

7. On 10-12th of May 2001 3rd Congress and Scientific Conference of the PASL took place in Mikołajki and its topic was ‘Progress in treatment of liver disease’ (organized by Piotr Małkowski MD PhD). Official language of this international meeting was English. there were 300 participants present with foreign lecturers: Christoph Broelsch (Germany), Niger Heaton (UK), Daniel Jacek (France), Didier Lebrec (France), Zdenek Marecek (Czech Republic), Jon O’Grady (UK), Jezus Przeto (Spain), Detlef Schuppan (Germany), Klaudio Tiribelli (Italy), Artur Zimmermann (Switzerland), Zhongxin Zhao (China).

8. In the following year on 10-11th of May 5th Scientific and Educational Conference of the PASL was organized in Ożarów Mazowiecki (by Jerzy Polański MD PhD)

9. Also in 2002, on November 28-29 in Szczecin PASL and Zachodniopomorski Section of the Polish Surgeons Society organized a conference ‘Liver transplantation – Szczecin’s experience’ (organized by Anna Boroń MD PhD).

10. On 22-24th of May in 2003 international 6th Scientific and Educational Conference of the PASL on ‘Emergency states in hepatology. Progress in hepatology’ was held in Międzyzdroje (organized by Anna Boroń MD PhD) with 250 participants and foreign lecturers (Dominique Ch. Valla, Monica Acalovschi, Frederik Nevens, Florence Lacaille, Jean-Michel Pawlotsky, Donald M. Jensen, Daniel Lesteven). There were 2 major themes: 1) diagnostic and therapeutic decision-making in emergency states in hepatology, mainly in hepatic coma, bleeding from the oesophageal varices, vascular pathology in general and after liver transplantation, hepatocellular cancer; 2) diagnosis and treatment of chronic viral hepatitis with particular impact on the rationalization of the treatment by studying viral kinetics in HCV infection, therapeutic novelties and concomitant infections. Conference materials were published in the Medical Science Monitor 2003; 9, Suppl.2.

12. In 2004 4th Congress of the PASL was held on May 14-15 in Ożarów Mazowiecki (organized by Jerzy Polański MD PhD).

13. On 25-27th of November 2004 Scientific and Educational Conference: ‘Chronic disease. And infected patient in modern world – new challenges.’ was organized in Szczecin (by Anna Boroń MD PhD) by the Polish Scientific AIDS Society and the Polish Association for the Study of the Liver. There were 175 participants from Poland present on this event. Various aspects – medical and social – of the chronic infectious disease (reasons for chronicity of infections, chronic viral infections after liver transplantation, attitude of the society towards a patient with chronic infection, legal labor regulations and chronically ill patient). Congress materials are supposed to be published in Polish Scientific AIDS Society editorial and in a new journal: ‘Clinical & Experimental Hepatology’ – first number is to be published in March 2005.

14.  On 5-7th of May 2005 Scientific and Educational Conference: ‘Progress in Hepatology’ was organized in Mikoiłajki (by  Piotr Małkowski MD PhD)
